Forget The Floaties

These floatation devices create a false sense of security. Children can mistakenly jump into water when not wearing the device. They also place a child in the wrong position for swimming.

INSTRUCTOR

My name is Lisa Johnson, I have been a pediatric occupational therapist for the last 10 years. I am also a pool owner; I was researching swim programs for both of my kids ages 3 and 1 to enroll in and I found that a “survival swim program” is what I was looking for. Unfortunately, I could not find a program in our local area. I decided to stay in Florida (where programs are readily available) for 6 weeks. My kids learned a swim-float-swim sequence to enable them to safely get to the edge of the pool. They also did the same swim-float-swim sequence fully clothed to simulate an accidental fall in the pool. While my toddlers were learning life saving swimming skills last summer, my neighbor’s 2yr old daughter unfortunately drowned in their backyard swimming pool in Saylorsburg on July 2, 2020. I decided I wanted to bring a survival swim program to my area. After a lot of research, I found the Infant Aquatics® program in Colorado. After speaking with Judy Heumann, I decided to become an instructor. I spent 6-weeks in Colorado learning side by side with Judy and other swim instructors. The training was intense but totally worth it. It was amazing to see the kids making progress and gaining confidence everyday! I look forward to bringing Avano Infant Aquatics to Monroe County, Pennsylvania.
